Popponesset Spit earns national recognition

The American Shore and Beach Association announced recently that Popponesset Spit in Mashpee is the winner of the 2017 Best Restored Beach Award.

The Spit, as it is commonly known, is owned and protected by Save Popponesset Bay and the Massachusetts Audubon Society. In recognizing the achievement, the nonprofits said the restoration would not have been possible without the support and donations of nearly $1.4 million from individual donors, as well as working in collaboration with the Town of Mashpee.

“Save Popponesset Bay is thrilled to receive this award, but more importantly we appreciate the opportunity to highlight the value of collaboration to preserve and protect our vulnerable coast and wildlife sanctuary,” says Michael Oleksak, President of Save Popponesset Bay.

Bosun’s Marine, which owns Mashpee Neck Marina on Popponesset Bay, lauded the restoration work on behalf of all who utilize Popponesset Bay and appreciate its natural beauty.

Save Popponesset Bay is an all-volunteer organization founded in 1987 that works to ensure the Popponesset Spit and Bay stay intact with the future of our children to enjoy long-term. Its mission is to protect and preserve wildlife for generations to come as well as keeping the waterways in and around Popponesset Bay safe.
